Gevrey Chambertin 2016 PINOT NOIR

Gevrey Chambertin 2016 PINOT NOIR

A silken, seamless burgundy with impressive purity, our 2016 Les Evocelles pinot noir, has layers of earthy character with hints of dark fruits, prune and spices. Endlessly smooth from start to finish showing cardamom with a touch of cocoa, high acidity and medium tannins, this wine is soft, rich and complex.

Behind the bottle

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN “LES EVOCELLES” by PM

In 2013 we acquired a small parcel of vines in Gevrey-Chambertin and began to work with Gerard Quivy, a fine winemaker who makes elegant and spirited wines in a straightforward, non-interventionist style. David and PM had bought a run-down house in Gevrey-Chambertin in 2011, which they carefully restored, ensuring they were well-known in the village when Les Evocelles came up for sale.

The name “Les Evocelles” is derived from old Burgundian dialect, which means the bushy place. One of our neighbours who is a wine historian, thinks that this may have been a wood long ago, before it was cleared by the monks and turned into a vineyard. Certainly a little wood remains on our land, and it is a delightful place with wild flowers in spring and summer. The rich yellow soil is argilo-calcaire, or calciferous clay, and filled with rocks and the fossils of long dead molluscs.

Gevrey-Chambertin, “les Evocelles”

These vines have the best location of all village appellations in Gevrey-Chambertin. The vines are situated on the slope right next to the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru, les Champeaux.   The vines are very old, close to 100 years of age.

Supple, enriching and seamless – a very special wine indeed.

Cellar Door

Our Cellar Door is a welcoming spot to try our wines, whether in the heat of summer, or with the comfort of a log fire in winter. As you taste our wines, perhaps take a look at some fascinating paintings and maps by David’s great-great-grandfather, John Turnbull Thomson after whom our enterprise is named. Thomson explored and mapped Central Otago in the 1850’s, as one of the province’s earliest explorers.
