Saint-Aubin, les Travers de Chez Edouard by PM

I first saw this parcel on Valentine’s Day in 2018. It was a cold, snowy morning and I had a rendez-vous with Armand at 9.30am. The street outside our house in Gevrey-Chambertin was covered with a layer of wet snow, the car too was covered, when I headed out carefully for the drive to Chassagne-Montrachet, mindful of snow and ice.

This parcel, le Travers de Chez Edouard, is a lieu-dit, AOC, which lies just above the premier cru lieu-dit, Derrière Chez Edouard. I wonder, who was Edouard, to have these lieu-dits names after him?

The village of Saint-Aubin is set against the hill and all the vines are positioned in a curve around and mainly above it.

Our parcel has a pronounced slope and goes down to a row of trees. It is almost directly above the village, though this is not very visible. There is a spectacular view across the valley to the vines of Montrachet. The soil is clay, mixed with pale golden stones, reasonably small. As it is a reasonable slope, drainage is good and the clay, even in winter seems less heavy than some other sites. There is wonderful exposure to sunlight as it is oriented south east. The parcel is framed by trees to the south.

The vines are about 40-50 years old. Wine from this parcel goes into our Saint-Aubin, Les Travers de Chez Edouard, AOC.

Cellar Door

Our Cellar Door is a welcoming spot to try our wines, whether in the heat of summer, or with the comfort of a log fire in winter. As you taste our wines, perhaps take a look at some fascinating paintings and maps by David’s great-great-grandfather, John Turnbull Thomson after whom our enterprise is named. Thomson explored and mapped Central Otago in the 1850’s, as one of the province’s earliest explorers.
